Important: ₹78,000 is the absolute ceiling regardless of how large your system is. A 5 kW, 10 kW, or 20 kW system gets the same ₹78,000 as a 3 kW system. The scheme is designed to make the 1–3 kW residential segment affordable — not to subsidise large arrays.

Reading this table: ₹30,000/kW for the first 2 kW. ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW. That's it — ₹78,000 is the hard ceiling. Any system larger than 3 kW gets the same ₹78,000. Some states (Rajasthan, Gujarat, UP) add their own top-up subsidy on top of the central amount — confirm with your state's nodal agency.
Who is eligible
- You must be a residential electricity consumer — not commercial or industrial
- You must own the roof, or have clear rights to install on it
- The system must be grid-connected with net metering — off-grid does not qualify
- Panels and inverter must be from the MNRE ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers) — your installer handles this
- You apply through the national portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) using a DISCOM-registered vendor
Not eligible: Off-grid systems, commercial/industrial connections, and the housing society common-area scheme (separate RWA rates apply). The subsidy is per household — not per system.
How to apply — step by step

Register on the portalGo to pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Enter your electricity consumer number and mobile number. Verification is via OTP.

Apply for feasibilitySubmit an application to your DISCOM for rooftop solar feasibility approval. They check grid capacity and technical viability.

Get the system installedUse a DISCOM-empanelled installer. They must use ALMM-listed panels and inverter. Verify empanelment before signing anything.

Apply for net meterYour installer submits the net metering application. The DISCOM installs a bi-directional meter — typically free of charge.

Commissioning and inspectionDISCOM inspects and commissions the system. They generate a commissioning certificate.

Submit bank details, receive subsidyEnter your bank account on the portal. The central subsidy is credited via Direct Benefit Transfer — typically within 30–45 days of commissioning.
Tip: A good installer files steps 3–5 on your behalf. Ask any prospective vendor: "Who files the subsidy application and net-metering paperwork — you or me?" If they say you, factor in the time cost.
Frequently asked questions
Does the subsidy come before or after I pay?
After. You pay the full system cost upfront (or finance it), and the subsidy lands in your bank account after commissioning and inspection — typically within 30–45 days. Budget for the gross cost and treat the subsidy as a reimbursement.
Why does the calculator show more than ₹78,000?
It shouldn't — we've corrected this. The PM Surya Ghar central subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 for any system 3 kW or larger. Some earlier versions of the calculator incorrectly applied an additional ₹9,000/kW above 3 kW — that figure is wrong. The correct answer is ₹78,000 hard cap.
Can I get the subsidy on a hybrid system?
Yes, on the solar portion only — provided the system is grid-connected, has export capability, and a net meter is installed. The battery is never subsidised. Rules vary by DISCOM; confirm before assuming.
What if my system is larger than 3 kW?
You still get ₹78,000 — the same as a 3 kW system. No additional central subsidy is available above 3 kW. Larger systems fully qualify for net metering and you can sell surplus to the grid, but the extra capacity is self-funded.
Are there state top-up subsidies?
Yes, some states add their own subsidy on top of the central ₹78,000. Notable ones: Rajasthan adds ₹17,000 via RREC. Gujarat and UP have their own top-up schemes. Check with your state nodal agency for current amounts.
